Library: April 6-10: Easter Around the World!

Hello! I hope you all are staying well in this difficult time. I'm hoping this week's library activities encourage your child to bring a few  international Eastern traditions to your home, Take care, and please feel free to leave feedback, pictures or stories of your family's reading adventures or Easter celebrations.

Extension Activities: 
  • Start by watching Mrs. Echols' reading of Easter Around the World by Shannon Knudsen.
  • Which traditions from Sweden, Russia and Ethiopia did you notice are similar or different from your family's traditions?
  • If you have an Austin Public Library account, you can read the rest of Easter Around the World on Hoopla, 
  • Research Easter in Britannica (username: stfrancis // password: Ktwelve
  • Read Easter books in Epic! (if you don't have an account yet, contact Mrs. Echols to get set up!)
  • Play gebeta via this app, Or break out your family's chess or checkers board!
  • Michael's is doing curbside pick ups if you need Easter supplies. 
  • More international Easter traditions: 
    • Make an Ostereierbaum (German Egg tree) using the linked Martha Stewart tutorial. Or simplify it by following Mrs. Echols' tutorial for how to make a German Egg tree using junk mail and supplies you have around the house!
    • In Egypt, children race eggs by rolling them down hills. Make this a STEM challenge by filling your eggs with different items (such as candy, pennies, rocks, beans, whatever you have!) and predicting which will roll faster). If you don't have a backyard or hill, use cardboard to make an egg racetrack down the stairs or from your couch to the floor!
    • Learn about the surprising history of cascarones, and make your own using the this tutorial!
