Story Times and Activities

March 23-27

Day 1: 

Author of the week: Oliver Jeffers (click here to access Jeffers' daily storytimes!)
  1. Pre-reading:
    1. Do any breathing exercises. 
    2. Examine the cover of the book. Identify the letters.
    3. What does it mean to be stuck?
    4. Can you guess if it's fiction or nonfiction? Why?
  2. Do your fiction cheer! 
  3. Preview the book by watching Oliver Jeffer's book trailer included below. 
  4. Laugh, because this book is so silly. 
  5. Watch the full reading video. 
  6. Possible discussion questions:
    1. What was the problem in this story?
    2. What would you do to get a kite out of a tree?
    3. How can we solve problems when we feel stuck? 
  7. Extension Activities
    1. PK:  Color the Stuck coloring page./ and or download the spot the difference activity. 
    2. ​K: Use the pictures from to the Stuck activity to paste into the correct column.

Day 2: 

  1. Pre-reading:
    1. Do any breathing exercises.
    2. Examine the front cover. 
      1. Identify any letters?
      2. How can we tell this is an Oliver Jeffers book? What reminds us of Stuck's cover?
    3. Is it fiction or nonfiction? Why? Do the appropriate cheer. 
  2. Read (watch) the Incredible Book Eating Boy
  3. Laugh because it's also very silly.
  4. Discussion questions:
    1. What does the word "DEVOUR" mean? Extra credit: Look it up in the Merriam-Webster dictionary!
    2. How do books help nourish our minds? 
    3. What kind of foods nourish our bodies? 
  5. ​Extension Activities:
    1. "Devour" (but don't eat) more books!
    2. Brainstorm and share reasons why we read by downloading worksheet below. Option: you could draw pictures of the the books you've devoured. 
    3. Design a book to devour by downloading the worksheet below.
